| Sorry for the vague name however I found a neat client that allows you to play just about any patch of minecraft you want (from alpha to beta 1.0[newest]) and simply restarting the client allows you to choose another patch if you so desire.
If you accidently updated to 1.0 (as we are still 1.8.1 at this time) or possibly you play servers with different minecraft update versions (1.8, 1.8.1, 1.9 pre-R5, ect)
you can easily change between them without doing a thing to your minecraft (you simply run this program from ANYWHERE on your computer and presto).
